Epidemiology and Health Statistics

Measles is a highly infectious and contagious disease that needs well-established prevention strategies. The disease is a viral disease that spreads through sneezing and coughing, which makes it to be highly contagious. Breathing contaminated air and touching contaminated surfaces leads to the contraction of the diseases. In 2019, the USA recorded the highest number of measles cases despite the disease being declared as eliminated in 2000 (Heywood, 2018). Cook County and Los Angeles County were at the greatest risk for a measles outbreak. Although Measles is highly contagious, Illinois State has a low number of confirmed cases. In 2019, Illinois had only seven confirmed cases of measles (Heywood, 2018). The presence of international airports was the major factor that contributed to measles cases in Illinois. The increasing number of unvaccinated travelers may increase the number of measles in the state due to exposure to the disease in other countries. According to Burki, COVID-19 was highly infectious in Mexico and other Latin American countries due to factors such as increased rates of diabetes and hypertension (Burki, 2020). Burki also stated that there had been serious outbreaks of Zika, dengue fever, chikungunya, and yellow fever in Mexico and other countries in Latin America (Burki, 2020).
